Beaver

This is an image of a beaver near his lodge

(We spotted a Beaver Lodge with a huge Beaver swimming in the water to gather more sticks for his home.)

It was amazing to see this large beaver, the largest rodent, working away building up his lodge (seen on right).  We saw this beaver near Wonder Lake.  He was using his large webbed feet to quickly swim, gather sticks, and return to add onto his his lodge.  The beaver holds these sticks in place with mud, plants, sticks, and rocks.

The water of these little ponds were pretty cold and it would get much colder by winter.  Beavers have thick soft under fur which insulates their bodies from these frigid waters.  Also, they build their lodges to keep out the cold winter temperatures.

We later found that Beavers have many uses for their  huge tales (6 to 10 inches long).  They use their tales as a rudder while swimming, a warning signal when danger is near, and as a balance while he is standing on his hind legs cutting trees and branches.
