Many of the banks of the riverbeds, mountain
sides, and low meadows were filled with blueberry bushes.
While hiking down Polychrome Mountain, the terrain turned from dry
tundra to wet tundra, which consisted of low shrubs (mainly
blueberries.) Although these berries were tasty, they were
small (pea-size) and were not as sweet s blue berries that you buy
in a store. Bears love these berries and almost every time
we say a bear it was eating them. Near Eielson Visitor
Center, we spotted a bear that was chowing blueberries (almost
like a vacuum cleaner) and barely took notice of us. Chuck,
our bus driver, said that one bear would eat up to 100,000
blueberries a day.
