Harriers...
We saw several Harriers flying low over the short
tundra grasses. These small birds (1 pound) are in the
hawk family and we were surprised to find out they can take off
straight up in to the air. They were flying low in
apparently random patterns. We were told by a ranger that these
birds hunt as much by sound as the do by site. Their faces
are a disk shape, like an owls, that help funnel sounds to their
sensitive ears. Their prey was Artic Ground Squirrels,
Picas, or Marmots.
