Essential Question:
What does it mean to be a great person, a hero?
Introduction:
For as far back in in time as we know, people have looked up to others who are especially good people. We have called these good people, heroes. Heroes have always shown the behaviors that the people of the time felt to be important and honorable.
I believe that to really understand why the people looked up to their heroes we must understand what behaviors their society felt to be important. The Ancient Greeks thought so deeply about what made someone a good person that I suggest we must ask ourselves, "what did the ancient Greeks believe made someone a good person?" To learn about this we must investigate the Ancient Greeks to find out how they lived their lives and what behaviors they felt to be important.
When we look at the daily life of the Ancient Greeks our investigations may not immediately give us the exact answers that we are looking for. We might have to dig deep, stick with it, make our own conclusions based on what information that we have. For instance, we may learn that the Ancient Greeks spent a lot of their time playing sports. We could make a conclusion from this that the Ancient Greeks thought that people who were athletic were good people.
What are your thoughts on studying the Ancient Greeks to gain a better understanding of what they felt that it meant to be a good person?

Stay on Task:
Use books, online resources, software, videos, or ask experts to investigate what daily life would be like if you lived in that Ancient Greece. Make sure that you look for clues that could lead you to understand what the Ancient Greek people believed would make someone a good person. Then, apply your knowledge of Ancient Greece to create a "Code of Conduct" that the citizens of Ancient Greece could live and learn by. A "Code of Conduct" that would follow to become good people.

Activity:
Aristotle (a famous Greek philosopher) believed that people learned best and could be good people when they had clear guidelines or laws. Your job will be to learn about what the Ancient Greeks felt made someone a good person and then develop a "Code of Conduct" that all citizens could follow to become good people. Choose one behavior that the Ancient Greeks believed a good person would exhibit and create a PowerPoint Slide to teach others about these Ancient Greeks beliefs. Combine each persons one slide to create a class "Code of Conduct" PowerPoint presentation.

Revisit the Question:
What does it mean to be a great person, a hero?
For further consideration:
Do you have a hero that you can look up to as a good person? What makes that person an especially good person? Are your reasons for looking up to this person as a hero similar to the reasons that the Ancient Greeks had?
