Students for Responsible
Use of the Internet

An Open-Circle Webquest

Here is a sample of what you will find:

"It arrived in the mail yesterday," the facilitator of your Open-Circle Discussion Group explains.  "Here, I will read the letter to you:

Dear students and Teachers,

I am happy to announce that our group,  Citizens Against the Internet, will work with members of your community, parents, teachers, and students to ban (prohibit the use of) the Internet from your school.  We feel that  the Internet exposes children to unsafe situations, provides students with inaccurate information from unreliable sites, and confuses students by exposing them to the  wily ways of Advertisers bent on selling their products. We believe that students can not handle the internet and therefore should not be allowed to use it. You will be hearing from us again, soon!

Bruce Stowe,
President of Citizens Against the Internet

What are your thoughts about this about this?"...

....The boy next to you says, "No way!!! My mom took some time to show me how to use "key words" to search these kid friendly sites like Kids Click, Yahooligans, and Ask Jeeves for Kids.  Now, I can find the information that I need in a shorter amount of time.  I can concentrate on learning the information instead of wasting all my time finding it."

"I agree!" the girl on the side says. "I always use  the Internet to find information because my parents work late and by the time they get home the library is closed.  I love using the Internet because I find current information that is spiced up with great graphics.  My dad told me that 10,000,000 kids like me use the Internet everyday."

The facilitator says, "I'm hearing people say that the Internet can be really helpful if we learn how to make safe choices, choose great sites, and avoid those tricky advertisements.

This sounds great! Take me to Students for Responsible Use of the Internet so I can get started!

4.  Teacher Corner:  Topic of the Month

Sometimes it seems that no matter how hard we teachers try, we end up trapped in our own classroom creating our own lesson plans.  The Internet is revolutionizing teaching and brining us into the age of “We Is Smarter Than Me!”  The Teachers Corner: Topic of the Month utilizes the Internet to create an open forum where teachers can share their ideas and lesson plan on the topic of the month.  Would you like to submit your ideas to be considered for publication in iwebquest.com’s Webquest Newsletter for the upcoming month?  Please e-mail your ideas or lesson plans to support@iwebquest.com. with the words “Teacher’s Corner:  Topic of the Month” in the subject box.

December's Topic:

Teaching math used to be pretty easy.  You know, open the book to page 64 and complete problems 1-24.  Now, the rules have changed and we are being asked to challenge our students to question,  learn math concepts and problem solving techniques, and then apply their learning in real life situations. Together, we can help each other and turn math into a subject that is meaningful for our students.  This month, iwebquest.com asks that you share your ideas, lessons, and projects on math concepts, problem solving, and math in the real world!

Send us your teacher proven ideas (support@iwebquest.com.)

5.  Kid’s Contest:

"Responsible Use" Advertisement Contest

iwebquest.com wants to recognize the all the effort that you and your student(s) have put into learning how to use the Internet wisely.  We invite you to apply your technology skills and your knowledge of "Responsible Use of the Internet" to create a public service advertisement that teaches others how to use the Internet responsibly.  Advertisements come in many forms.    You may want to create a banner advertisement, and Avid-Cinema video advertisement, a Hollywood High cartoon advertisement... Be creative in the way that your advertisement teaches others how to how to use the Internet Responsibly.

Please submit all entries to contests@iwebquest.com.

Teachers, parents, and students proceed to Students for Responsible Use of the Internet (An Open-Circle Webquest.)

Please recommend iwebquest.com’s Webquest Newsletter to a friend!

Have a great Month.
I look forward to speaking with you again at this same time next month.

Sincerely,

Matt Durant
