Yesterday, I was at MSNBC.  I read that the Internet now has over one billion (1,000,000,000) web sites. That's a lot of sites. This began the thought process flowing. With all those sites is going to be easy to find the quality information that I am looking for.  So, I chose to go out and search for sites on colonial America for a Hotlist that I am working on with these thoughts in the back of my mind.  I did find some great sites but I also found some real duds.  This brought up more questions. Who made these sites and what is their expertise?  Were they proofed for accuracy?  Are these sites age appropriate.  Are they user friendly?...  It was time to revisit my criteria for selecting quality web sites.

Evaluating Web Sites Activity

  1. Opening Activity-  I found this great site “California's Velcro Crop under Challenge”( http://members.unlimited.net/~kumbach/velcro.html)  at my favorite Teacher’s Search Directory, Blue Web’n.  Help me decide if this is a web page I should use in my new Webquest: California’s Agri-Challenge.
  2. In small groups of five (5), go to the  Cyber Central Intelligence Agency. Your team's mission (should you choose to accept it) is to develop recommendations to help students discriminate fact from fiction on the Internet.
  3. Develop a guide selection of Internet Resources.
  4. Participants will use their rubrics to explore web sites.  The first goal is to find websites to include in your webquest.
